How to create
imprints using clay
Follow our step by step guide
In this project you’ll learn how to create your own imprints using items around the garden such as seashells, flowers or leaves.

Step 1: Get rolling
Get some air-dry clay, roll into a ball, place on a sheet of wax paper and then shape into a 2-3mm thick oval using a rolling pin.

Step 2: Make some shapes
Take your object- seashells or leaves – and gently press into the clay to create an imprint. Make sure you press in hard enough to replicate the shape on the clay. If you’re using a hard object remove it once you’ve made the imprint. If you’re using a soft object like a leaf, leave it in the clay. Allow to dry outside until the clay is hard.

Step 3: Start painting
Decorate your imprint by colouring in the marks left behind in the clay using washable paint. You can use one colour or lots of colours to decorate your imprint.

Step 4: Just add watery
If you were using leaves or flowers in your imprint, remove them gently. Then using watercolour paint and some water, colour in the details left behind in the clay.

Step 5: You're done!
Your imprint is now complete! Make another one using more flowers or leaves, or different sized shells
