If anyone knows what it truly means to work from anywhere, it’s Keira Bourke: she literally works from a tour bus. The director and founder of Newy Tour Co, which she runs with her fiancé, Nathan Corrigan, takes visitors on adventures throughout the Newcastle, Port Stephens and Hunter Valley regions of New South Wales. Since starting their business in late 2023 following an 18-month stint travelling the world, it has gone from strength to strength. Not only did they add a second tour bus to handle the demand, but they’ve welcomed people from 38 countries, won accolades at regional tourism and hospitality awards. And in that time, Keira has learnt a thing or two about juggling not only the demands of running a small business, but running a small business that’s always on the move. These are her remote work setup tips for making work, well, work from anywhere.

Focus on What You’re Doing at the Time

“We run tours for a solid eight hours. We’re picking guests up from the hotels, we’ve got our microphone on while we’re driving the guests around explaining the region, giving them all the information while we’re at the activities, we’re making sure everyone’s comfortable. So by the time we drop them all back off at their hotels in Newcastle in the afternoon, that’s when most of the admin sometimes has to start for the day.”

Don’t Miss a Chance to Tick Something off Your List

“On a tour day, I bring a backpack with my diary and laptop. So, for example, if we’re running a Hunter Valley Wine Tour and the guests have sat down at a cellar door to taste wine for the next 45 minutes, it’s very common for me to hotspot my laptop to my phone, do some emails, return some calls and do what needs to be done, on the road. Bringing my laptop and diary with me everywhere definitely helps me stay on top of things.”

Make Multiple Records of Everything

“Our business is very cloud-based in the digital world. However, physically having a diary where I write all my meetings, all my bookings in, gives me a visual check to make sure nothing is forgotten. So that’s definitely one thing that I do to stay organised and that diary comes with me everywhere.”

Streamline Your Work Essentials

“It’s a balance between being really minimalist and just having what’s required, but also making sure that it’s ergonomic and comfortable. Everything I do is off my laptop, but when I move between places, I will always bring my laptop stand and a wireless, portable mouse with me, so I’m not getting a sore back and sore shoulders from being hunched over. It’s a balancing act between portability but also making sure we’re not setting ourselves up for failure.”

Stay Connected Throughout the Day

“Technology makes it extremely easy to quickly communicate and look at those messages when it’s convenient. A lot of the time, Nathan will send me any content he has taken, group photos or something like that, that I’ll then post on social media. We like to showcase what actually happens on our tours.”

End the Day by Getting Organised

“Make sure everything is written down and documented properly, have clear systems, whether that be physical or digital, to capture everything. We have so many moving balls in the air and when you’re working on the business and in the business, it’s really important that everything is captured. We spend a little bit more time at the end of our day to get organised for tomorrow.”
