Choosing an exercise book depends on your needs when it comes to studying.

There are a variety of different sizes and rulings to suit different subjects, ensuring you’re covered when it comes to class time. In this buying guide, we will take you through our wide range of exercise books and the different types, sizes, and ruling types to make deciphering your book list easier.

Useful Information

Ruling Types

Our range of exercise books accommodates different ruling heights throughout to cater to the student journey from young beginners in primary school, to developed learners in secondary education. This way, fulfilling your school booklist is less complicated. There is everything from 8mm ruling heights for those who are already proficient with handwriting, to 24mm dotted thirds for younger ones at the beginning of their student journey. Grid, graph, and quadrant ruled books also come in different grid sizes, to cater to various age groups. NSW and QLD exercise books use different ruling heights and colours to fit state-specific booklists.

Ruled

Ruled

Ruled pages commonly have an 8mm ruling width and are useful for students who have already developed their handwriting skills.

Grid/Graph/Quadrant

Grid, graph, and quadrant-ruled exercise books are great for practicing mathematical and scientific formulas. The grid-ruling gives you space to layout your equations, and graph books include a plain border for drawing a graph’s axis.

Music

Music books utilise the stave-ruling type, which is 5 parallel lines designed to display the pitch of each musical note. Some music books are stave-ruled on one side, with 8 mm line-ruling on the other, so you can write out your musical notes, and document musical theory.

Helpful Tips

Paper GSM

The paper gsm of an exercise book is the weight of each page. Most premium exercise books have a 70gsm paper weight so that students can write on both sides of the page. For learners in primary school, the 100gsm scrapbooks are suitable for use with creative tools, crayons and markers. Other book styles such as tracing pads come in a paper weight range of 60-90gsm, but keep in mind that they are also made with a more transparent paper stock.

Size

Exercise books come in a variety of different sizes to suit your needs. The most common throughout our range are A4 and 9x7"” sizes, which are ideal for students to take on the go. There are larger sizes available for young learners in primary school practicing specific skills or needing more room to establish their creative flair. You can filter through our array of selections by the size you need, to make putting your booklist together a little easier.

Page Count

Page count is an important factor in an exercise book, especially when it comes to choosing one to suit your needs. A higher page count is great for long-term use so you can document notes over multiple terms, and a smaller page count is great for a more streamlined approach, where you can separate your subjects into smaller books for organized referencing later.  Our range features a variety of page counts which will make fulfilling the requirements of your booklist easier.
