Looking for a unique way to add colour to your space? After she moved into a new studio, craft influencer Kitiya Palaskas was inspired to make it her own. While some might reach for the paint tins, she decided to think outside of the box… and onto the fridge. Making simple aesthetic changes to a plain surface – like a fridge – can brighten up a space. So Kitiya experimented with the Cricut Maker 3, as well as Cricut materials and Cricut accessories, to create vibrant vinyl decals for a DIY fridge makeover. Here’s how she did it.

A Colourful DIY Fridge Makeover with Cricut

Step 1: If you don’t already have one, create an account in Cricut Design Space so you can make the most of its creative tools to design your projects. Kitiya used a variety of shapes from the Cricut Design Space shape library to create the motifs for her fridge design. Remember to measure the different sections of your fridge so you know how big to make your design.

Once your design is complete, the Cricut Maker 3 will cut the permanent vinyl.

Step 2: Once your design is ready to cut, select your material – in this case, Smart Permanent Vinyl – and let the Cricut Maker 3 do the rest.

Hot Tip: If you need to be able to return the fridge to its original condition at any point, use Cricut Smart Removable Vinyl for this project.

Once the Cricut Maker 3 has finished, carefully remove the excess vinyl using the Cricut weeding tool.

Step 3: After your vinyl is cut, use the weeding tool from the Cricut Basic Tool Set to remove the excess vinyl, so that your individual shapes are easy to access and apply.

Before finishing your DIY fridge makeover, ensure it’s clean or the Cricut vinyl won’t stick.

Step 4: Use a degreasing product to clean the fridge and get rid of any sticky residue or marks. This creates a nice, clean surface to apply the vinyl shapes.

Kitiya Palaskas used a Cricut Maker 3 to give her studio fridge a bright makeover.

Step 5: You can use Cricut Transfer Tape to give you more control when affixing the vinyl, although with these larger shapes and surface areas it’s not essential. Apply the vinyl slowly, bit by bit, smoothing it with the scraper tool from the tool set as you stick to ensure there are no bubbles. If you like, you can spray a bit of water onto the area first, which allows the vinyl to move around on the fridge surface so you can get it in exactly the right place. The water will dry off, leaving the vinyl stuck down perfectly. Continue applying your vinyl until – voila! – your DIY fridge makeover is complete.
