Useful Information

What is Smart Lighting?

Clap, remote and voice control lights were once a convenience only seen in movies but thanks to invention of smart lighting you can now feel like a movie star and control your own lights in fun new ways. Choose a classic globe and command brightness settings or play around with LED globes, beams and or strips to experience a world of technicolor. With this seemingly simple upgrade you open your eyes to a myriad of luxuries you didn’t even know you needed. Set the mood for a romantic date or disco, make your lights mirror the colours on your television for a cinematic experience and so much more.

How does Smart Lighting work?

Smart lighting is essentially automation; the process of using machines, computer software or other technology to perform tasks ordinarily done by humans. Smart lighting swaps out your manually controlled traditional light bulbs with automated bulbs that are controlled via an internet, Bluetooth or a central hub/bridge connection. Embrace a life of convenience and never lift a finger to switch on a light again.

What should I consider when purchasing Smart Lighting Products?

What kind of lights do I want for my space?

Know what you want out of your smart lighting experience. You can of course just purchase a smart globe that works independently and call it a day, however, there are a lot of affordable starter packs out there that give you the option to expand. The Phillips Hue range is plentiful, with smart round bathroom mirror lights, outdoor patio lights, television lights and so much more. Explore our range and find a brand that suits your space today.

Will my pre-installed dimming switch interfere with my smart bulb?

Often older technology can interfere with new technology as they compete to perform the same task. This can be the case with you new smart dimming bulb and your old, pre-installed dimming; the two mechanisms get confused and sometimes clash, causing flickering lights. In this case you could consider swapping your older original dimmer switch out for a smart dimming switch to avoid any interference. Alternatively, you could choose LIFX Smart Beams or Nanoleaf Shape Lights that work without connection to a light socket and easily mount to walls.

Does this globe need a hub?

It can be as easy as purchasing a smart bulb and syncing it up with your device via the app, but some smart bulbs only work with certain hubs, bridges or modules and may not be compatible with your already existing Smart Home system. A compatible bridge, hub, module or Smart Home system act as the motherboard for your smart lighting ecosystem and sometimes your globe won’t work without its main communicator. When searching our Smart Lighting range you’re able to filter by compatibility so you can easily view products compatible with your pre-existing Smart Home system or one that you intend on buying.

How do Smart Homes work?

You’ve probably seen these three hub names floating around the internet when googling “Smart Home” but how do they differ? And which one should you consider?

Apple Homekit

Apple Homekit

Apple are known for maintaining their exclusivity, consequently, HomeKit only works with Apple products— a feature that benefits Apple fans and shuns Android users. HomeKit, like all Apple products, is extremely user friendly and works on all iOS devices. Due to Apple’s previously required hardware encryption, the list of compatible smart devices is more limited in comparison to their competitors, Google Home and Amazon Alexa, but future collaborations and range expansions are taking place as we speak. If you’re going to purchase a smart light for your HomeKit make sure to look out for the ‘Works with HomeKit’ badge.

Google Home

Google is only just trailing behind Alexa as the most popular Smart Home platform and offer a wide range of compatible products. What’s great about Google is that their assistant is the same throughout all your devices, Nest, Hub, Pixel Phone or Android device. This gives them the slight upper hand as Amazon’s Alexa can only be hailed within range of the Hub or App.

Google Home
Amazon Alexa

Amazon Alexa

Amazon’s Alexa is one of the most popular smart home platforms. Many reports have stated that Amazon dominates 53% of the smart home market. Since then, they’ve been fierce in maintaining that spot, consistently and aggressively expanded their grip over the market since the introduction of the Amazon Echo Dot. Much like Google Home’s ‘Actions’ option, Alexa’s ‘Skills’ allows you provide weather reports, recipes etc., it’s compatible with iOS and Android devices through the Alexa app and is continually upgrading.

When it comes down to it all these platforms have the same base features, and all allow you to voice or remotely control your Smart Home. Luckily, you’ll find that leading manufacturers of smart home lighting apparatuses such as Phillips and LIFX are compatible with all three platforms, so decision making really boils down to your current mobile device, your budget as well as your preferred voice assistant.
