Useful Information

What is a mobile phone?

Mobile phones used to be about talk and text on the go. But they're now so much more. Sure, you can still make calls and write text messages, but you can also browse the web, update your social media status, shop online, play games, listen to music and podcasts.... The list goes on. A smartphone now is essentially a tiny computer – faster, better, and smarter than ever before, and part of a rapidly evolving market that is both human-centred and innovation heavy.

How do I choose the right mobile phone for me?

Start by thinking about what you'll be using your smartphone for on an everyday basis.

Maybe you just want the basics of talk, text, and maybe some social media connectivity and are looking for something without the bells and whistles.

Maybe want something to fuel your online content creation, and a great camera is your top priority.

Maybe you want superfast connections to the web, and are looking for a phone with 5G network capabilities.

Your mobile phone is going to be your digital companion, so it's worth putting a bit of thought into what your top priorities are.

Helpful Tips

What features should you look for in your smartphone?

Camera

Today's smartphones allow pretty much anyone to become a photographer. Ultimately, for better quality images, a general rule is that you should look for great high megapixels in your phone's specs. Some of today’s smartphones have cameras up to 64 megapixels, with additional modes that many help you take polished, focused, and detailed shots without having to go to a photography class first. Most smartphones have at least one front and one back camera. However, you might see phones with three or even four back cameras. You might see the resolutions of these cameras denoted as “12 MP + 12 MP + 12 MP”, explaining the number of megapixels in each camera. Some also have telephoto or periscope zoom for capturing far-away scenes. And then there are camera features. You will see some things like "night mode" for photos in low-light settings, or “portrait mode” for a configuration that enhances your selfies and pics of friends automatically. Some phones even give you the ability to record 4K or even 8K video; ideal for the content creator on the go.

Display type

Your display size can make viewing your media a more immersive experience. You will want to look for a high-quality display if you use your phone as your primary media-watching device.

The three most common terms you will hear used to describe displays are Retina, OLED, AMOLED (and sometimes even Super AMOLED).

Apple uses the term Retina display to refer to the displays on their iPhone devices. They use this term to refer to a high pixel density, which essentially means that you'll be unable to differentiate between the individual pixels on screen. This will offer a smooth, detailed viewing experience.

In other smartphones, you might see OLED (organic light-emitting diode) and AMOLED (active matrix organic light emitting diode). OLED displays create vivid colours and stark black tones by using organic compounds. They are thinner, more flexible, and more power-efficient that LCD displays as a general rule of thumb. AMOLED is a kind of OLED display that has the added benefit of being scalable – you can apply it to any screen size unlike OLED which is a thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT LCD) on top of the OLED, which allows for a more detailed, faster responding display than its OLED counterparts. However, the TFT layer renders the screen difficult to see in the sunlight, giving the AMOLED a slight advantage in these settings. However, AMOLED is said to have a longer lifespan. Super AMOLED offers even more longevity, as well as helping you get more hours out of a battery charge. Super AMOLED is even thinner, more flexible, and offers improved visibility in sunlight over its AMOLED counterpart.

Refresh Rate

You might also want to look at refresh rate, especially if you play demanding mobile games where responding quickly is key. A refresh rate, measured in Hz, is the number of times per second a screen refreshes. Higher numbers, therefore, reflect a faster, smoother view experience. Many smartphones have 60 Hz screens, although newer, higher end models can feature refresh rates of even 120 Hz.

Storage and processing

Although many smartphones make it easy to backup your files and photos to the cloud, extra space for storage on your phone itself is still highly sought after. Some phones also offer an expandable storage capacity via an SD card.

Processors are what allow you to multitask and switch between apps. They also impact the speed of your phone, so if you don't want to experience lag in your day-to-day use, look into picking a faster processor. Snapdragon along with Apple Bionic processors are well-regarded for their power, so if you're going to demand a lot of your phone, higher numbers – such as the Apple A14 Bionic processor and the Snapdragon 888 – should be considered.

Battery life

If your first mobile phone came to you in the mid-2000s, you might remember the days of week-long battery life. As we've come to expect more of our mobile phones, and they've become smartphones, it would be almost impossible to expect the same kind of battery life. Some general rules of thumb might mean that a heightened processor capacity or screen size might mean you will have to compromise on battery life. But, as technology accelerates, smartphone creators are keeping up with demand, finding new ways to optimize battery life without the user having to sacrifice how they use their smartphone. Generally, though, battery life is highly dependent on how much and how you use your phone. Things like GPS tracking and screen time, as well as background apps that automatically refresh can impact your battery life.

When browsing our range, look for phones that call out battery life or look for higher mAh (milliampere hours) in the specs of the phone. Battery capacity is measure in mAh which means milliamp-hour over time. The higher the number generally means the longer your phone can go between charges, however, the aforementioned factors of phone use and phone design will impact this too. Generally, phones above 3000 mAH will be reliable for most of your day, with some phones even having 4000 or 5000 mAH batteries that could take you further than even a single 24 hour period. If you’re a smartphone user who’s always on the go, you might want to look into a powerbank.

Mobile Phone Cases & Accessories

After you’ve invested in your phone, it’s a great choice to add some protection to it. This could mean a case or screen protector or – even better – both. From wallet-style cases for a bit of added storage, to bright, colourful patterned cases for some added fun, you can find something that meets your needs and personal style. Our range even encompasses super-tough, military-graded cases those who might be prone to dropping or bumping their phone. If you know you’re one of those people, you might even consider getting a phone grip to adhere to the back of your case, helping you get a better grip on your device. For added style and flair, look to our Otto range, which encompasses both cases and phone grips in on-trend colours and styles.

Don’t forget your display needs protection too! Glass and plastic screen protectors are available, with glass offering a very high level of protection, often without compromising on touchscreen sensitivity.

Finally, having a spare charging cord and a powerbank on hand is a great choice if you know you’re going to spend a long time away from a wall socket. Larger capacity powerbanks (measured in mAh) are ideal for long events, like camping and festivals, while smaller, more compact batteries can be helpful if you're going to using your phone a lot throughout the day but will have the chance to fully recharge overnight.
