Useful Information

What is a WiFi network?

Wi-Fi is a technology standard that utilises different radio frequencies and channels to transmit data wirelessly through the air. It allows for the transmission of an internet signal to devices such as PC’s, Laptops, Gaming Consoles, Smartphones etc. without the need for ethernet cabling directly to the device. This is more flexible and allows for connected devices to move freely or to be placed in areas where traditional cabling may not be feasible.

How do I set up a WiFi network?

To start with, you’ll need a router, modem router or Mesh system which you should place in a central location of your chosen space, so that any WiFi-enabled device that’s in range will be able to connect to the same network. Once set up, you’ll be able to switch on your WiFi-enabled devices and find your network in the internet settings. If the network is equipped with security, you’ll be required to enter the network password on each device that you connect to the network. After this, the device will connect wirelessly without the need to re-enter your password each time.

In order to create a Wi-Fi network and share the internet around your home or office there are a few factors you will need to consider. There are multiple types of internet connections available in Australia and you are best to first understand what type you have access to. This will then help determine the best products for your home or office.

I am using (or am getting) the NBN

For ADSL. ADSL 2+ or VDSL connections, a modem router should be used. For NBN connections It is important to understand what type of NBN delivery method is available to your area. The easiest way to do this is to check your address here.

Types of NBN:

  • Fibre to the Building (FTTB) - VDSL Modem Router OR Modem & Mesh System combination
  • Fibre to the Node (FTTN) - VDSL Modem Router & Mesh System combination
  • Fibre to the Premise (FTTP) - Router or Mesh System
  • Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) - Router or Mesh System
  • Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) - Router or Mesh System
  • Fixed Wireless or Skymuster - Router or Mesh System

I am using a 4G network

A 4G router allows you to use the 4G network to create your own home or small office WiFi network. Simply insert an active SIM card into the router to create a WiFi network you can use with multiple devices.

Routers

Routers

As the core of your network, a router receives an internet signal and then communicates with all your wired or wireless devices to ensure they receive the bandwidth they need. A standalone router can be used for NBN types where a modem is not needed (Like FTTP) or can be paired with a separate modem for other internet types.

Modems

A modem is a device that receives an internet signal from your provider. Usually this signal is transmitted over copper telephone wire for ADSL/VDSL connections. The modem passes over the internet signal to a router which then connects to your devices. Standalone modems are becoming less common due to NBN rollouts and in most cases a router with a built-in modem (Modem Router) is far more convenient.

Modem Routers

A modem router combines two devices to provide an all-in-one solution for a connection to the internet. Modem routers can be used on different connection types, including ADSL and NBN VDSL (FTTN) and can provide you with both wired and WiFi connectivity for sharing the internet with your devices. Most modem routers can also be used without the modem and function as a router only.
