Useful Information

What is an ergonomic chair?

An ergonomic chair is a great tool to have in your workspace as it allows you to adjust all elements of the chair to suit your natural body position. These elements include:

  • seat height and depth
  • back angle
  • back tilt
  • lumbar support which may be fixed or adjustable
  • headrests to support the neck

Why do you need an ergonomic chair?

Ergonomic office furniture is essential for those who are sitting at a desk or using a computer for many hours. Dr Andrew Rochford states that having an ergonomic set up in your workspace for your body is the ideal way to prevent daily aches and pains. By using ergonomic essentials like a high-quality desk chair, you can avoid straining your neck and unevenly distributing weight on your knees and hips while improving upon your posture.

How to choose the best ergonomic chair

To choose the best ergonomic chair, there are several factors to consider, including how long you will be sitting for, your body height and weight, and your desk measurements.

  • Make sure that the seat height is adjustable to suit your height. You should be able to sit with your feet on the floor or a footrest comfortably.
  • Make sure that the backrest is adjustable and has firm lumbar support to suit you.
  • Ensure that the seat surface is comfortable for you. It should be made of breathable materials that minimise heat.
  • See that the seat depth and width suit your body. You should be able to sit in your ergonomic chair without pressure at the back of your knees and feel a comfortable and even pressure across the entire seat.
  • Ensure that the chair has a stable base for comfort and security.
  • The armrests should provide equal support to your arms, with the ability to adjust in height and distance from the seat and allows you to rest your elbows at a right angle in a relaxed position.

Ergonomic Chairs

When sitting for long periods of time, you need a supportive office chair with features to keep you healthy and comfortable. Consider the design of the chair, as well as how it feels, when purchasing. Do you need adjustable arm rests to ensure your chair fits under your desk and supports your arms? Will you need a head rest or lower back to keep you comfortable? You can also design your own office chair to ensure it complements your workspace.

Sit Stand Chairs

As it’s recommended that you switch between standing and sitting throughout the day, to accompany a standing desk, it’s a great idea to have a chair that can rise and lower just like your desk. Sit-stand chairs, often referred to as drafting chairs, can be lifted higher than regular office chairs, offering you flexibility throughout the day. Chairs like the Poly Lab Drafting Chair offer all the adjustability you’d expect from a high-quality office chair, but with improved height flexibility to compliment your standing desk.

Sit Stand Stools

Sit-stand stools provide the same height flexibility of sit-stand chairs, but without a tall back rest. This makes them a more compact option, ideal for those who don’t want to crowd their workstation. Some even have added ergonomic features to keep you moving while you work, such as the Arden Sit Stand Stool, which allows you to slowly rotate the seat in a circular motion, helping to build core stability while you sit.

AFRDI Explained

When shopping for an office chair, you may come across the acronym AFRDI. Office chairs that are AFRDI approved are always considered ergonomic.

Find out more information here on the AFRDI Certifications Guide.

What is an AFRDI approved chair?

An AFDRI approved chair is a chair that has been tested to the Australian New Zealand standard and approved by the Australasian Furnishing Research & Development Institute. The office chairs that are AFDRI approved comply with AS/NZS 4438 and are ergonomically sound, tough, durable and safe.

Are gaming chairs ergonomic?

Gaming chairs are intended for long periods of sitting and using a computer, making them great ergonomic chairs. They are designed to put you at eye-level with your computer screen with the backrest supporting your weight while keeping your neck and back aligned. Additionally, gaming chairs put a lot of emphasis on adjustable armrests and high reclining backrests to provide longer-term comfort and prevent pain and stiffness. You can use a gaming chair in your workspace if you prefer it to a standard ergonomic office chair.
