Commitment 6: Provide a helping hand to 50,000 small businesses when they need us

What’s the issue?

Small businesses are the backbone of our communities – however we know they’re often the first to face financial hardship in times of crisis, as we’ve seen all too often during both the 2019-2020 bushfire season and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.

As critical members of our community but also as our customers, who rely on our products and services to run their business, we want to ensure that we’re there to help small businesses survive in their times of need – and once the crisis is over, help them to thrive again.

What are we doing?

We’ve set ourselves an ambitious target to support 50,000 small Australian businesses by 2025. There’s a few ways we’ll be doing this:

  • Our store teams will have the opportunity to use their community contribution budget to support small businesses in their area
  • Through delivering programs, such as skilled volunteering, to help small businesses in those areas that need a hand.

The story so far

When COVID-19 hit, we witnessed small businesses face incredible hardship as they worked to adjust their business models so that they could continue to trade safely and adhere to government restrictions. We wanted to help – so we launched the Print, Copy and Create a Brighter Future initiative to offer free printing services for things like social distance signage, takeaway menus, posters and floor decals so that they could stay open and operate safely during the pandemic.

Through this initiative, we were able to contribute $55,000 worth of printing to support more than 1,000 small businesses, in over 120 communities across the country.
