Commitment 4: Raise $5m for local causes

What’s the issue?

We believe the most effective way to truly become a part of the communities where we live and work is by working together, building real, meaningful relationships and providing support to those who need it most.

Connecting with our communities and coming together has never been more important. 2020 has presented various challenges and opportunities for all of us, and we know that Australian communities have responded in different ways. That is why we're committed to supporting local communities and doing what we can to help build strong connections to help others get through, or even overcome trying times.

What are we doing?

We recognise that each community is different, and the challenges they face are unique, too. That’s why we empower our teams to support their local communities in ways that are relevant and right for them and their customers.

We also seek to keep our communities front of mind for our team members by encouraging a workplace culture where giving back and making a difference is both celebrated and rewarded.

We’re continuing to trial and explore a range of programs and initiatives to ensure we can make a lasting impact in the communities where we live and work including:

  • Creating a new ‘Community Engagement Team’ who will be located across the country
  • Changing the way we share stories of our local impact through an engaging Community Wall in every store
  • Continuing to evolve our approach to our Round Up to Make a Difference initiative to make a more meaningful impact to organisations that matter most to our teams across the business

The story so far

Together with our team and our customers, Officeworks contributed a record $5.5m in FY2020 across all of our community initiatives. Over $1m of this was contributed directly to local organisations through:

  • Round Up to Make a Difference; a small change program where customers are invited to round up the cost of their purchase to the nearest dollar to support a local organisation selected by our store teams.
  • Our store teams making direct in-kind contributions to local community groups, schools and businesses.
  • Print, Copy and Create a Brighter Future; an initiative that saw our store team members walk their local streets and shopping precincts and offer our print and copy services to help small local businesses continue to trade safely in line with government regulations and stay open through and beyond COVID-19.

We look forward to deepening our connections within local communities and with our national partners so we can continue supporting the communities where we live and work in the coming years.
