Commitment 14: Repair, repurpose or recycle 17,000 tonnes of unwanted products

What’s the issue?

E-waste, or electronic waste, is one of the world’s fastest growing waste streams – in the past five years alone, e-waste has surged by 21%. At Officeworks, we know that our customers are looking for more ways to easily and responsibly dispose of their e-waste.

The good news is, there are great, accessible options for repairing and recycling e-waste these days – electronics often contain valuable materials such as metals, and by recovering these materials, we’re able to keep them out of landfill and use them again and again.

What are we doing?

It’s not just e-waste recycling that we’re tackling– it turns out, you can actually recycle many kinds of used stationery too!

On your next visit to Officeworks, look out for our recycling collection points – we now offer free recycling services for common tech and stationary items, including batteries, pens and markers, cables and chargers, hard drives, computers, monitors and printers at many of our stores. Visit our store locator to see what items are accepted in your local store.

We will continue to look at ways we can provide free, easy and secure recycling services to our customers. And working with partners to explore ways we can repair and repurpose items to give them an extended life and remain in the economy for longer.

The story so far

For 10 years now, we’ve been offering free, easy and secure recycling services at Officeworks, and every year there’s more categories that we’re able to accept. In the last financial year, we collected over 1,000 tonnes of e-waste from our customers, and set up a new partnership with the World’s Biggest Garage Sale in Queensland, which supports the repair and repurposing of imperfect furniture via our stores.
