If you lost your iPhone, would you lose everything on it? Here’s a simple guide on how to back up your valuable and precious data to iCloud or to your computer.
For most people, their iPhone is their entire life. It holds photos and videos, messages, notes, reminders, contacts and much more. But many don’t have their device backed up. That means if it is lost or stolen, they’ll lose everything – including all those irreplaceable memories. The good news is, it is a pretty simple task to back up your iPhone. Having a backup also makes it easy to transfer your data when you buy a new iPhone as well. There are two ways to back up your iPhone – to iCloud or on your computer.
How to Back Up Your iPhone to iCloud
iCloud is an online storage solution with 5GB of free space. Customers can purchase up to 2TB of storage, handy for lots of hi-res files or if you want to share with up to five family members.
To Back Up Your iPhone to iCloud
Step 1 Go to the iPhone settings and connect to a wi-fi network. This is important because you will be uploading a lot of data and it will be faster on wi-fi. Doing this back up on 4G or 5G would use up lots of your plan’s data.
Step 2 In the iPhone settings, tap on your name at the top of the screen and tap “iCloud”.
Step 3 Now tap “iCloud Backup” and ensure you are still connected to wi-fi during the process. This initial backup will take some time depending on the amount of data on your phone. What takes up the most room on your iPhone are photos and videos.
Step 4 You can check on the progress of the backup in Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup. When the backup is finished, users will see the date and time it was completed.
All done Later you can manage your storage in the settings and decide what information (like photos, contacts, notes and mail settings) and apps you’d like to back up on iCloud. Here you will also be able to see a visual representation of what apps and data are taking up the most space in your storage.
How to Back Up Your iPhone to a Computer (PC or Mac)
Backing up your iPhone to your PC or Mac will mean you can have an encrypted copy of your iPhone’s data on your computer. This backup method requires there to be enough free space on the hard drive. It is then possible to upload that data to a new iPhone or replacement iPhone directly from the computer rather than connecting to iCloud. This is also a free option because you won’t need to purchase extra iCloud storage space.
To Back Up Your iPhone to your PC or Mac
Step 1 Connect your iPhone with a cable to your PC or Mac. To facilitate the backup on a PC, users will need to have iTunes installed. For Mac users running macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, they will be able to locate their device in the Finder window. Earlier versions of macOS will need to open iTunes.
Step 2 If this is the first time you have connected your iPhone to your computer, there may be a message asking to trust this computer or you may need to enter the passcode on the iPhone to unlock it.
Step 3 Locate the device. In the Finder window, the iPhone should appear in the list alongside your hard drive. In iTunes, there will be an iPhone symbol on the menu bar. Click on the name or the symbol and this will open another window.
Step 4 Scroll down to the section called “Backups”. There will be an option to “Back Up Now”. Users will also have a choice to encrypt this backup which allows account passwords and more to be recorded. If you select this option, make sure you choose a password you won’t forget or keep a record of it somewhere safe as you won’t be able to access the backup without it. (There is an option to “Change Password” near where you select encrypt backup.) Once completed, the time and date of the backup will appear. The bar at the bottom of the window will also display how your storage is divided between photos, apps, docs and messages.
